(i880 has a sim card and its for sprint not made by sprint)

How do GSM+SIM cards work? Do I need a service provider or do I just stick in the SIM card and call?

Ok lets say I buy an unlocked GSM phone in the US and a prepaid sim card. Can I call people w/o a service provider or do I need a service provider? If I do, is the service provider free or are there monthly bills in addition to the sim cards?

I am going to London for 6 months in January and I was told it would be easiest to switch to a company that has phones with sim cards (I now have verizon, and they don’t) in order to keep my number and for things to be cheaper, etc. Is this true? What is the point of a sim card and why do I need one?
My contract ends in nov. so I wouldn’t switch, just start a new plan when my old one ends.
I meant february

Ok I’ve been looking at some really cool unlocked phones with email capacity on ebay and well I think I might want to get one beacuse my contract is up in Oct. ….but I’m wondering..

How do you get a sim card for an unlocked phone in the U.S.?

I mean, do I still need to have a contract and everything?

Can I buy a sim card from a major company without buying a phone from them??

Or can I just get one off the street??
